Sustainable Forest Management Concepts
Sustainable forest management starts with knowing what you have, what you want,
and the biological life histories of the forest organisms. Forests are complex
combinations of organisms that interact and change over decades of time. All
species; both plants and animals respond to nutrients, water, and sun energy
available to them. This explains how one group of species will live in one
environment and a different group in another environment.
In forests the basic sustainable productivity is in the soil and the genetic
biodiversity of native species. Some species will thrive in older forests and
some in younger forests. Sustainability means providing a range of forest
conditions to provide habitats for a broad spectrum of species.
Sustainable Forest Management Policy
- NEFF educates and advises towns and many other interested groups on forest
management and land use.
- NEFF is not an advocacy organization, but we advise wise land use choices.
- In fulfilling its mission, NEFF works in the arenas of forest management,
education, land conservation, and forest policy. A part of promoting
sustainable management of forestlands is to analyze and promote enlightened
forest policies.
- NEFF participates in some forest based organizations and boards.
